Our Success
Collaboration that delivers
Working collaboratively with our members, our pre-competitive projects and communities deliver solutions to common industry problems, driving innovation and new breakthroughs. Our efforts are focused around our four strategic priorities: delivering data-driven value, accelerating the use of RWD/RWE, harnessing AI to accelerate R&D and sustainability-driven R&D.
Here are some of our many success stories where we have made a positive impact.
Recognised among Bio-IT World’s 2025 award winners
Pistoia Alliance was recognised as part of the Bio-IT World Innovative Practices Awards 2025, highlighting impactful work advancing innovation across the life sciences ecosystem.
Enabling semantically interoperable analytical methods
The Methods Database Project supports the Pistoia Alliance Methods Hub vision by making analytical methods and supporting tools available in a more interoperable, machine-readable form for the pharmaceutical industry.
Driving sustainability in life sciences R&D
Our Sustainability White Paper 2025 explores the challenges and opportunities for reducing environmental impact and embedding sustainable practices across the R&D ecosystem.
Turning FAIR data into measurable business outcomes
The FAIR Business Survey Report captures the key business drivers for implementing FAIR data principles and highlights the outcomes organisations are seeing in practice.
Improving instrument procurement with a shared questionnaire
Our Future Labs work delivered EQIP (Enhanced Questionnaire for Instrument Procurement), helping standardise how companies capture and share key technical, integration, regulatory, and security requirements when evaluating lab instruments.
Contributing to FDA guidance on AI for regulatory decision-making
We submitted a public response to the FDA via Regulations.gov (FDA-2024-D-4689), sharing perspectives on the use of AI to support regulatory decision-making for drug and biological products.
Tracking the evolution of the Lab of the Future
The third annual Lab of the Future report highlights key trends in laboratory technology, investment, and adoption shaping R&D across the life sciences.
Benchmarking industry adoption of IDMP
Our 2024 IDMP-O Benchmark Report provides critical insights into how pharmaceutical organisations are implementing IDMP standards to accelerate digital transformation.
Advancing IDMP-O with a major new release
The IDMP-O v1.5.0 release delivers enhanced functionality and updates that strengthen semantic interoperability and support broader industry adoption of IDMP standards.
Addressing barriers to better patient outcomes
A joint Pistoia Alliance and ZS report, Are misaligned incentives preventing better patient outcomes?, examines how structural challenges in life sciences R&D limit integrated data use and impact patients.
Accelerating the use of RWD/RWE
We published a peer-reviewed paper in Frontiers in Medicine on Patient Listening on Social Media for Patient-focused Drug Development.
Supporting the adoption of Informed Consent Blockchain
We built a blockchain solution for Informed Consent in clinical trials and implemented key components of decentralized digital
identities.
Creating a new industry standard
As part of our flagship IDMP Ontology project which is leading the way in developing a digital, machine-processable standard in support of new regulations, we launched IDMP Ontology 1.0 covering all five ISO IDMP standards and won a prestigious 2024 Bio-IT World Innovative Practices Award for pre-competitive collaboration.
Creating best practices for the ethical use of digital health data
We published best practice guidelines for the storage of collected sensor-generated data from remote modelling technologies through our Quality Generation and Ethical Use of Digital Health Data in Clinical Studies (QDatE) project.
Creating an industry first cloud-based platform
Our Methods Hub project achieved an industry first with a cloud-based collaborative tool that enables instant transfer and overlaying of analytical methods and results data in a single platform for cross-company use.
Developing champions of Inclusion and Diversity
We trained over 80 individuals from 29 companies across the world through our dedicated Diversity & Inclusion in Leadership program.
Accelerating the implementation of FAIR principles
We have helped the life sciences industry implement the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) principles by developing a FAIR Maturity Model, FAIR Toolkit and FAIR4Clin, a guide that discusses the value of the FAIR principles for clinical data.
Driving the adoption of emerging technologies in the laboratory
For two years running we have conducted a widely publicized annual Lab of the Future report in partnership with Lab of the Future Congress to support the adoption of emerging technologies such as AI and ML.
Ensuring User Experience is fit for the digital future
We have developed a Toolkit and numerous guides to support User Experience in R&D life sciences.
Creating a library of hazardous chemical reactions
We have created a Chemical Safety Library of hazardous reactions, improving laboratory safety for scientists working on breakthrough innovations worldwide.
Unlocking the value of data in Electronic Lab Networks
We have helped the life sciences industry unlock the value of data in Electronic Lab Notebooks (ELN) using data standards and semantic enrichment.
Developing HELM notation
We created and established Hierarchical Editing Language for Macromolecules (HELM) as the industry’s complex biomolecule notation of choice.
Collaborating to improve the exchange of experimental information
We created an open, extendable, and freely available Unified Data Model for the exchange of experimental information about compound synthesis and testing.
Advancing antibody drug discovery
We generated novel Ab structures and addressed the need for improved Ab structural data sharing to accelerate drug discovery through our AbVance project.
Establishing best practices for ontologies mapping
We established best practices and tool recommendations for the application, management and mapping of ontologies in life sciences.
Creating an interface with research-led patient charities
We established an important interface between the biopharmaceutical industry and research-led patient organizations and medical research charities and published a peer reviewed paper.
