Focus Area: Building, Sustaining, and Adopting Interoperable Ontologies for Seamless Data Sharing and Automation

Join us for a cross-industry conversation on building, sustaining, and adopting interoperable ontologies for seamless data sharing and automation. As pharmaceutical, manufacturing, finance, and energy organizations increasingly rely on shared data structures to power integration and AI, the industries that have solved this well – and the ones still struggling – have a great deal to teach one another. This session will take a close look at cross-industry data interoperability: what breaks it, what fixes it, and why so many technically sound solutions stall at the adoption stage.

Jim Wilson, President of the Industrial Ontologies Foundry (IOF), will share how other industries are building ontologies and how the life sciences community can leverage that work rather than solving these problems in isolation. From there, the day moves through the interoperability problem as it appears across sectors, what has actually worked in practice (data standards, common APIs, shared taxonomies, and ontologies alike), and the organizational and adoption barriers that determine whether a good technical solution ever gets used.

We’ll have a great lineup of speakers – Industry Ontology Professionals sharing their unique perspectives from across sectors. Attendees will also hear more about the work being done through the Pistoia Alliance Ontologies projects, as well as the Ontology Map-a-thon co-project with ELIXIR.

Hosted by EPAM at their Boston Seaport location, this event brings together practitioners, standards leaders, and platform providers for a working discussion – not just a showcase – on what it will take to make interoperable ontologies real.

Event Format

Invited attendees meet to discuss cross-industry approaches to data interoperability facing the pharmaceutical and life sciences industry. Subject matter experts representing pharma, manufacturing, finance, energy, standards bodies (including IOF), and platform providers present their unique perspectives on the problem, what has worked, and how to drive adoption.

Due to limited capacity and audience curation, registrations are reviewed before confirmation. Please note that registration places you on a pending list. Your place is only confirmed once you receive an acceptance email.
