Following our first Member Book Club, we are pleased to invite Pistoia Alliance members to join us for the second edition of this informal and thought-provoking discussion series.
The Member Book Club brings our community together to explore ideas, perspectives and issues relevant to the life sciences industry. Each session centres around a selected book, providing an opportunity to share views, discuss key themes and consider how they relate to the challenges and opportunities facing our industry.
For our next Book Club, we will be reading Bottle of Lies by investigative journalist Katherine Eban.
Published in 2019, Bottle of Lies is an investigation into the global generic pharmaceutical industry and the systems designed to ensure the quality and safety of medicines. Drawing on extensive research, confidential FDA documents and accounts from regulators and whistleblowers, Eban examines allegations of data falsification, manufacturing failures and attempts to circumvent regulatory oversight.
At the heart of the book is the story of Indian pharmaceutical manufacturer Ranbaxy and whistleblower Dinesh Thakur, whose disclosures helped expose serious problems with the company’s manufacturing and quality practices. From there, Eban explores wider questions about pharmaceutical regulation, overseas manufacturing and the challenges regulators face in overseeing an increasingly global medicines supply chain.
