The lack of an ontology / standard vocabulary in pharmaceutical instruments and equipment inventories complicates categorizing and querying these systems. Digitalization efforts face challenges in building efficient data pipelines, matching process and analytical method requirements with site capabilities, and ensuring cybersecurity and efficient maintenance of the equipment fleet. Addressing this issue will streamline data management, improve efficiency and security, and facilitate technology transfer. We propose a pre-competitive collaboration within the Pistoia Alliance framework between pharmaceutical companies and instrument/equipment vendors to create an ontology for instrument and equipment inventory. This structured framework will enable natural language queries and support software and hardware upgrades by providing necessary knowledge about the instrument fleet. It will also promote data re-use and cross-fertilization across groups with varying data expertise, creating opportunities for progress in less advanced areas. A well-documented inventory will help establish pipelines for consistent, FAIR data.
